Pizarro shoots Werder to Europa
Werder Bremen reached the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League by beating FK Aktobe 8-3 on aggregate following their 2-0 win in the return road leg against the Kazakhstan club.
Knowing they needed to make up a three-goal deficit after the 6-3 first leg loss at Weser-Stadion, Aktobe pressured Werder in the early going with the support of some 11,000 supporters. But Werder striker Claudio Pizarro shocked the hosts after 10 minutes, heading home a corner kick for the 1-0 lead. Emil Kenzhisariev was sent off in the 35th minute for his second warning and Pizarro struck again just before the half-time whistle, essentially deciding the game and the tie with the 2-0 lead at intermission.
This is Werder Bremen's group in the Europa League.

The Peruvian striker spent last season on loan at the Weserstadion from Chelsea and scored 26 goals in 35 appearances.
"We are intensively working on having him here for the new season and potentially also for more than just the new campaign," revealed general manager Klaus Allofs.
"He is a great striker and has shown what he can do for the club."

Controversy over Pizarro's alleged involvement in transfer dealings
Hamburg - Werder Bremen striker Claudio Pizarro has been linked with a bung affair involving transfer fees that has already led to the resignation of club chief executive Juergen Born, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported Sunday. Born resigned on Friday under pressure from the club's board after it was reported that the 68-year-old had received 50,000 dollars in bungs from the transfer of Roberto Silva to Bremen in 2001 while his son Maximilian Born got between 50,000 and 100,000 dollars for his involvement in the contract extension of Nelson Valdez.
In both cases, Pizarro's advisor Carlos Delgado transferred the money, and the striker is now under pressure himself.
Until now, Pizarro, who is on loan to Bremen from English Premier League club Chelsea, has claimed that he was not an agent in the Image firm now being investigated by Peruvian tax officials.
Instead, he claimed he was only a silent partner in the firm represented by Delgado, holding 42,800 shares.
However, the Bild am Sonntag claims it has documents in its possession showing that Pizarro received 30 per cent of the transfer rights from Silva's move.
Players are banned from working as agents, meaning Pizarro could face a lengthy ban.
"The board has called on the executive to check with FIFA what the exact regulations are," Bremen chairman Willi Lemke told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
It remains unclear if having shares in an an agency constitutes working as an agent under FIFA regulations.
Bremen sports director Klaus Allofs said he remained confident that Pizarro, the club's top scorer with 19 goals this season, had done nothing wrong. "I believe Claudio that he was never involved in activities.
His shares in Image is an investment but we will have to look exactly at what happens in the coming weeks."
German DFB Cup: Wolfsburg 2 - 5 Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen came up with a surprisingly convincing 4-0 victory at home over Stuttgart in the 24th game day. In front of 40,000 spectators at Weser Stadion, the first half had few highlights though one of them was a free kick goal by Diego in the 34th minute. Werder dominated the second half and secured their first Bundesliga victory of 2009 with a goal by Claudio Pizarro in the 53th and two scores from Markus Rosenberg (59th and 74th).
Werder Bremen reached the semi-finals of the German DFB Cup with a 5-2 victory at Wolfsburg. In front of 24,115 spectators in Wolfsburg, Diego (3', 55' pen), and Claudio Pizarro (71', 89') both scored twice while Mesut Özil (7') also hit for the winners. Werder Bremen 0 - 0 Bayern Munich
Werder Bremen played to a scoreless 0-0 draw at home against Bayern Munich on the 22nd game day. In front of 42,100 spectators at Weser Stadion, both teams offered an excellent and open game. Despite playing the final 74 minutes a man down, Bremen were able to control the run of play and bring home a draw against the defending champions.
The game started with a shock for the Green-Whites. Werder defender Naldo was shown the red card after just 16 minutes for fouling Bastian Schweinsteiger as the final defender. Just before that, Per Mertesacker had lost the ball to his German national team colleague. And Werder played from that point on with 10 men.
AC Milan 2 - 2 Werder Bremen
Two header goals by Claudio Pizarro in the second half helped Werder Bremen complete a mini-miracle by coming back from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 draw at AC Milan, sending Bremen to the UEFA Cup Round of 16. After a 1-1 result in the first leg, Bremen advanced 3-3 on aggregate on the away goals rule. Andrea Pirlo (26' hand ball penalty) and Alexandre Pato (33') shocked Thomas Schaaf's team in the first half. But in the end, it was the Green-Whites celebrating.
Werder Bremen 1 - 1
Werder Bremen played to just a 1-1 draw at home against Borussia Möchengladbach in the 20th game day of the season. Claudio Pizarro sent the 42,100 spectators at Weser Stadion into a frenzy with the opening goal in the 76th minute. But Michael Bradley equalised in the 79th minute for the guests.
The exciting first half saw both sides create a number of goal chances - albeit unsuccessful. Gladbach's Paul Stalteri cleared Claudio Pizarro's header at the right post in the ninth minute. Bremen had luck a minute later as the linesman ruled off-sides on Karim Matmour's heading pass to Roberto Colautti - a very close ruling.
On Wednesday Werder will play against AC Milan.
Friendly: Lech Posen 2 - 3 Werder Bremen
It works after all! Werder Bremen finally collected their first victory of 2009 in their fourth test match of the winter. After losing the last game rather unluckily, the Green-Whites earned a deserved 3-2 (2-1) victory over Lech Posen, the leaders in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Winter acquisition Alexandros Tziolis brought the Green-Whites ahead 2-0 with goals in the 24th and 27th minutes.
Lech Posen, however, pulled one back shortly before the break through Semir Stilic (43'). And Stilic evened the score 2-2 at the hour mark. But Claudio Pizarro gave Werder the 3-2 victory with his goal in the 74th minute.
UEFA Cup: Werder drawn against AC Milan
Werder Bremen's international campaign in 2009 will get underway with a mighty task. The Green-Whites pulled an extremely interesting opponent in the next round of the UEFA Cup. Trainer Thomas Schaaf's men will take on AC Milan in the round of the last 32 teams.
The first leg against the Italian giants will be played on February 18th/19th, 2009 at the Weser Stadium, with the return leg to take place in Milan on Thursday, 26.02.2009. Should Werder progress through to the round of the last 16, they will face the winners of the clash between Olympiakos Piraeus and AS St. Etienne. The games in the round of the last 16 teams will be played on Thursday, 12.03.2009 (first leg) and Thursday, 19.03.2009 (return leg).
Werder Bremen 2 - 1 Inter Milan
On the sixth and final match day in the UEFA Champions League group phase, Werder Bremen beat Inter Milan 2-1 (0-0) and secured themselves a place amongst the last 32 sides in the UEFA Cup. Claudio Pizarro (63') and Markus Rosenberg (81') put the Green-Whites 2-0 up before Zlatan Ibrahimovic reduced the deficit late on (88').
Karlsruher SC 1 - 0 Werder Bremen
In the penultimate game before the Bundesliga goes into its winter break, Werder Bremen lost 0-1 (0-0) away to Karlsruher SC. 29,373 spectators at the ‘Wildparkstadion' saw the only goal of the game scored late on by Stefan Buck (83').
Tragedy for Pizarro in the first and last minute
It could have proven the start of another glut of goals when Claudio Pizarro broke through with mere seconds played and then saw the very first chance of the game bounce away off the inside of the far upright. Instead of what could have been the goal to open the floodgates though, the close call quickly lulled the Green-Whites into a false sense of security and proved the beginning of a day two forget for Claudio Pizarro, who was to hit the post twice on the day as well as prove the centre of attention in both the first and last minute.
The Peruvian striker was to find himself in the thick of the action again in the final minute, but for a less positive incident. Pizarro reacted to the provocation of his opponent with a slap to the cheek and was duly shown the red card for his troubles. The incident was the result of a challenge in the penalty area, under which Pizarro appeared to be felled, but referee Winkmann, who had been very fussy in his decision making up to that point, saw no foul: “In that scene I was clearly shoved to the ground. Suddenly there were three or four Karlsruhe players around me and I reacted badly to that. I shouldn't have done what I did. I was a little too hot headed,” admitted the striker.
General manager Klaus Allofs made it clear that the front man let his team mates down with more than just the chances that went a begging: “When you are dissatisfied then there is a tendency towards ill-discipline. That's the only way to explain such a reaction,” remarked the former striker, who demands more composure: “No matter what goes on beforehand, you have to deal with it differently. Otherwise you only disadvantage your own team.”
Three match ban for Pizarro
Werder striker Claudio Pizarro has been handed a three match suspension by the German Football Federation (DFB) following an individual hearing by the DFB's supervisory committee on Monday. The panel issued the ban as a result of Pizarro's slap against Karlsruhe's Martin Stoll, which has been classified as unsportsmanlike conduct following provocation. Pizarro and Werder Bremen have accepted the DFB's decision.
The suspension means that the Peruvian striker will miss out on the final pre-winter break clash with VfL Wolfsburg (Sat. 13.12.2008) as well as the first two Bundesliga games in 2009 (against Arminia Bielefeld, Sun. 01.02.09 and Schalke 04, Sat. 07.02.09).
Werder Bremen 5 - 0 Eintracht Frankfurt
On the fifteenth match day of the season, Werder Bremen returned to top form as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 (3-0). 42,100 spectators in a capacity filled Weser Stadium saw the Green-Whites take the points in style thanks to goals from Claudio Pizarro (11'/20'/62'), Diego (44'/pen.) and Aaron Hunt (75').
